Messages from the Colony
Attention
Alumni of Sigma Nu:
A MOST IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
************ Alumni vs. Colony Softball Game *************
From Colonist Bryan Maw
We will be hosting our annual softball tournament between alumni and
colonists
3pm Saturday March 26th at
Brookside Park (it is just northeast of campus,
on 13th Street near Haber). After the tournament we will
having a BBQ right
there at the park. If you can make it please let me know so I can
get a
gauge of how many to plan for.
My email is
bjmaw@iastate.edu and my phone
number is 563-299-8237. Please feel free to call or email me with
any
questions or if you just want to talk. It should be a home run of an
event,
so bring your A-game because I know we colonist want to hit it out
of the
park!
*The rain date for the event is Saturday April 9th, same place and
time.
Love, Honor, Truth
As most of you are hopefully aware, the Gamma
Sigma Colony has been established on the Iowa State campus and is
finishing up year number 2. The colony is doing well and it
appears we are on target to obtain our charter back from National
within the next year. It has been a pleasure working with the
young men as they work towards this goal. A special thanks to
Dave North, Craig Adamson, Tyler Farner, Justin Sample, Matt German
and David Mason in their efforts on the Alumni Advisory Board.
The Colony will be holding the 2nd annual Softball game between the
Alumni and Colony members. The
alumni won the first game
last Spring by a resounding score of 18-12. You may say that
is not all that impressive but you guys know how fast Tyler Farner
was in college and it has been 16 years since then.
Last year we had about 12 alumni present and it would be great to
increase the number this year.
Please RSVP with Brian Maw or myself ( cjzswailes@mchsi.com
)by March 15 (week from next
Tuesday) so the Colony can plan for the proper number at the cookout
after the game.
Since the above announcement came out a number
of the Brothers of been sending emails back and forth generating
good buzz about this event.
It will be fun and a great opportunity for you to show your
support, renew old friendship (and maybe bury a few old hatchets),
and meet the Colony. If
you are able to make it DO
IT!!!
And one other thing ... It is hard to get the word out to everyone about this type of activity. Email is, by far, the best way yet we probably have over 100 Brothers who actively use email but we don't have the address. PLEASE pass this around, gin up some interest, and forward on any email address that you suspect we might not have or any updates. We can sure use the help.
Message from the Association (SNHC) President
*EMAIL LETTER OF MARCH 3RD 2011:
To the
Brothers:
A lot has happened and a lot is
happening. Let me briefly summarize some of it:
Last week, Feb 23rd, we held a Board
meeting (conference call) of the Sigma Nu House Corp. (SNHC).
We try to keep these meetings to an hour but a lot is going on and
we overran a bit (1:20 total). By the way the minutes of these
Board meetings will always find their way in time to our website (
http://SigmaNuISU.org ).
First thing is that our leader and
guiding light, Brother Ted Hollander, who has been the President for
several years needed to step back a bit because of other time
commitments. Ted will remain on the Board but we needed a new
President. Brother Marshall Wilharm (myself) was nominated to
step in as interim President (until normal formal elections, as per
our By-Laws, can be held this coming Fall). This nomination
was seconded and passed by the Board. The responsibilities and
challenges during this critical time of Re-Colonization are many for
the President. We are
very grateful for what Brother Hollander has done for the Alumni and
we will continue to get good consul from him. I am dedicated
to do the best I can stepping into this job and place great
importance in the trust that the membership has placed upon me.
I only ask that all of you will try to find some opportunity to do
your part, at whatever level you can, in helping SNHC and our
Colony Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) bring our Charter back to ISU.
Although the meeting covered a
numbered of important areas, two other items stood out:
Brother Chris Swailes is a member of
SNHC but also the head of the AAB. His report on the status of
the Colony was detailed, most informative, and positive.
Briefly; the target is still in sight, the Colony direction is
positive and enthusiastic, we have a great group of pledges forming
the core of our future Chapter, but a couple challenges still
remain. One of these you can be a big help, the other is up to
the colonist themselves:
-
The Colony stills needs to grow in size.
They need outstanding young men and recommendations and
suggestions from the Alumni are a critical part of this
process. Give this a good thought and see if you can help.
-
The Colony needs to improve their grade
averages. The standards are high (as they should be) and quite
complicated (surprisingly). They are close and they have a
solid plan. Under Brother Swailes watchful eye, they will
succeed.
Also brought to the attention of the
Board was a $2500 fee placed on the Colony by National (new this
year for a colony) for the Conclave to be held by National
(representative attendance mandatory).
It was decided by nomination and unanimous vote that SNHC
would cover this expense.
It would not normally be an expense that individuals would
bear and the Board felt that this would further demonstrate our 100%
support and commitment for the Colony.
2007 Fall Reunion - Old stuff but still interesting & relates to Recolonization
The 2007 Fall reunion was a great success. We had the fortunate opportunity to have two guests address the alumni present at the Friday night banquet.
Sophia Magill,
a senior admissions counselor/group visits coordinator for Iowa
State University's Office of Admissions, addressed the group on what
is happening at Iowa State University and the University's attitude
toward the recolonization of Gamma Sigma on campus. Sophia
graduated from Iowa State University in 2005 and has already amassed
a very impressive resume. While at Iowa State earning her
degree in Political Science she was also an active member of the
Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. In her presentation to the group
she indicated that the University is very accommodating to the idea
of re-establishing the undergraduate chapter of the oldest fraternity
at Iowa State.
Christopher L. Healy, Director of Expansion for Sigma Nu
Fraternity, offered information regarding the recolonization
of Gamma Sigma at Iowa State University. Chris provided a
wealth of information and a very positive outlook on the goal of
establishing a new undergraduate chapter at ISU. Chris
indicated that this would be a committed partnership effort between
the national fraternity, the Gamma Sigma alumni and the new
candidates of the Legion of Honor. (Picture to left is Brother Chris Healy
with Nancy Ovenden at the 2007 Fall Tailgate)
- National Fraternity
The national fraternity would contribute funded manpower ($25,000) for one semester. This would place a national chapter advisor on campus full time and cover the costs for meeting spaces and other related expenses. The national fraternity would also provide training to the alumni on the current Sigma Nu advisory responsibilities. - Gamma Sigma Alumni
The alumni would form a committed advisory board that would actively support the undergraduates during their first semester and beyond. - Gamma Sigma Candidates
The undergraduate candidates would be trained and guided by the national representative present on campus and by the volunteer alumni advisory committee. After the first year the undergraduate chapter and the committed alumni advisory committee would work with the national fraternity to continue the tradition of sustaining a growing vibrant Gamma Sigma Chapter at Iowa State.
